Devlog 1: Ease In and Out
Hello everyone! I'm Blazer, one of the developers working on FA and in charge of writing the Devlog. As Forma Arcanum's development continues, I will be providing some peek into the current advancements in development.
For this week, our focus was the animation side of Kayden, our Main Character. In a video that Kayden was in as a preview, we had some feedback concerning the animations of Kayden being janky. While it is possible for us to keep working and adding frames to it to make it smoother, there are also other ways to make it flow better. One of them is easing the animations in and out.
Easing the animation in and out mostly concerns the pose Kayden is in while switching from idle to run, or from running in one side to another. In order to make the animation flow more naturally, we basically added an animation state where Kayden had just started running or is switching from one side to another. This small addition helps to sell the movement of Kayden shifting his momentum as well as reducing jank.
While it still has some jank to it, it's improved well considering our workforce and time investment. This way, we can focus more on the other parts of the game which we are still working on.
As a bonus, we also changed his freefall animation a bit to add more flair to the movement. I hope you enjoy seeing Kayden in action!
